Air Handler

The indoor unit that houses the blower fan, evaporator coil, and air filter, responsible for circulating conditioned air through your home's ductwork.

What Is a Air Handler?

The air handler is the indoor workhorse of your HVAC system, typically found in a closet, attic, basement, or utility room. It contains the blower motor that pushes air through your ducts, the evaporator coil for cooling, and the air filter. In a heat pump system, the air handler is the indoor half of the system. The blower motor can be single-speed, multi-speed, or variable-speed — with variable-speed offering the quietest operation and best humidity control.

Why It Matters for Your Home

Your air handler's blower motor runs more than any other component in your HVAC system. A variable-speed blower can save energy and dramatically improve comfort compared to a single-speed motor. If you're replacing outdoor equipment, it's often worth upgrading the indoor air handler at the same time to get the full efficiency benefit of the new system.
