Ductwork
The network of metal or flexible tubes that carry heated or cooled air from your HVAC system throughout your home and return air back for reconditioning.
What Is a Ductwork?
Ductwork is the highway system for your conditioned air. Supply ducts carry heated or cooled air from your HVAC system to each room through registers (vents). Return ducts bring air back to the system for reconditioning. Ducts can be made from sheet metal, flexible insulated tubing, or fiberglass duct board. The condition, sizing, and sealing of your ductwork dramatically affects your system's performance — the Department of Energy estimates that duct leaks account for 20-30% of air loss in a typical home.
Why It Matters for Your Home
Even the most efficient furnace or AC system can't perform well with leaky, undersized, or poorly designed ductwork. Hot and cold spots, rooms that never seem comfortable, high energy bills, and excessive dust are all symptoms of duct problems. Duct sealing and insulation are among the most cost-effective improvements a homeowner can make.
