Ventilation
The process of exchanging stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air to maintain healthy oxygen levels, remove pollutants, and control moisture.
What Is a Ventilation?
Ventilation is the V in HVAC and is essential for healthy indoor air. Natural ventilation occurs through open windows and doors. Mechanical ventilation uses fans and duct systems to deliberately bring in fresh air and exhaust stale air. Modern energy-efficient homes are built so tightly that without proper mechanical ventilation, pollutants, moisture, and CO2 can build up to unhealthy levels. Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) and Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) bring in fresh air while recovering energy from the outgoing air.
Why It Matters for Your Home
If your home feels stuffy even when the HVAC is running, you may have a ventilation problem. Newer, tighter-built homes are especially prone to inadequate ventilation. Proper ventilation also helps control moisture, which prevents mold growth and protects your home's structure. Balancing ventilation with energy efficiency requires expert knowledge of your specific home.
