Air Quality

MERV Rating

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — a scale from 1 to 20 that rates how effectively an air filter captures airborne particles, with higher numbers meaning finer filtration.

What Is a MERV Rating?

MERV ratings help you compare air filter effectiveness. A MERV 1-4 filter catches large particles like dust bunnies. MERV 5-8 catches mold spores and pet dander. MERV 9-12 captures fine dust and auto emissions. MERV 13-16 catches bacteria and tobacco smoke. Filters rated MERV 17-20 are used in hospitals and clean rooms. For most homes, a MERV 8-13 filter is the sweet spot — high enough to improve air quality without restricting airflow to the point where it harms your equipment.

Why It Matters for Your Home

Choosing a filter with too high a MERV rating for your system can be just as harmful as a dirty filter — it restricts airflow and forces your equipment to work harder. Your system was designed for a specific airflow, and the filter needs to work within those parameters. A knowledgeable technician can recommend the right MERV rating for your specific system.
