HEPA Filter

High Efficiency Particulate Air filter — a specialized filter that captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including allergens, bacteria, and fine dust.

What Is a HEPA Filter?

HEPA filters are the gold standard of air filtration, originally developed for nuclear facilities. They capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns — including pollen, pet dander, dust mites, and some bacteria. However, true HEPA filters are extremely dense and most residential HVAC systems don't have the fan power to push air through them. Standalone HEPA air purifiers or whole-home systems with dedicated fans are typically better options than trying to use a HEPA filter in your standard furnace.

Why It Matters for Your Home

Many homeowners buy HEPA-rated furnace filters thinking they'll dramatically improve air quality, but these overly restrictive filters can actually damage their HVAC system by starving it of airflow. A MERV 13 filter paired with a standalone HEPA purifier is often a better approach than trying to force HEPA filtration through your ductwork.
