Air Quality
Air Filter
A replaceable screen in your HVAC system that traps dust, allergens, and debris to protect your equipment and improve indoor air quality.
What Is a Air Filter?
Your HVAC air filter sits between the return air duct and your furnace or air handler. Its primary job is protecting your equipment from dust and debris, but it also improves your indoor air quality. Filters are rated using the MERV scale (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) from 1 to 20. Higher MERV ratings capture smaller particles but also restrict more airflow. For most residential systems, a MERV 8-13 filter offers a good balance of filtration and airflow.
Why It Matters for Your Home
A dirty air filter is the number one cause of preventable HVAC problems. It restricts airflow, making your system work harder, increasing energy bills, and potentially causing frozen evaporator coils or overheated furnaces. Check your filter monthly and replace it every 1-3 months depending on your home's conditions. It's the simplest thing a homeowner can do to protect their HVAC investment.
