Short Cycling
When your HVAC system turns on and off too frequently in short bursts instead of running through a complete heating or cooling cycle, wasting energy and causing excessive wear.
What Is a Short Cycling?
Short cycling occurs when your heating or cooling system shuts off before completing a full cycle, then restarts shortly after. Normal cycles typically last 10-20 minutes. Short cycling can be caused by an oversized system, dirty air filter, refrigerant leak, faulty thermostat, overheating furnace, frozen evaporator coil, or electrical problems. The constant starting and stopping puts extra stress on the compressor and other components, significantly shortening equipment life.
Why It Matters for Your Home
Short cycling is both a symptom and a cause of problems. It wastes energy, creates uneven temperatures, increases humidity issues, and accelerates wear on expensive components like the compressor. If your system is cycling on and off every few minutes, don't ignore it — the underlying cause needs to be identified and corrected before it leads to a major breakdown.
