Cooling
Refrigerant
The chemical compound that circulates through your AC or heat pump system, absorbing and releasing heat to cool (or heat) your home.
What Is a Refrigerant?
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of any cooling system. It cycles between liquid and gas states as it absorbs heat indoors and releases it outdoors. The most common refrigerants in residential systems are R-410A (Puron) in newer systems and R-22 (Freon) in older ones. R-22 has been phased out due to environmental concerns, making it increasingly expensive and difficult to obtain. If your system uses R-22 and develops a leak, upgrading to a newer system is often the smarter financial decision.
Why It Matters for Your Home
Your AC system should never need refrigerant 'topped off' as a normal maintenance item. If a technician says you're low on refrigerant, it means you have a leak that needs to be found and repaired. Simply adding refrigerant without fixing the leak is a temporary (and expensive) band-aid. This is a common area where less experienced technicians take shortcuts.
