R-410A

The standard refrigerant used in modern residential air conditioners and heat pumps, replacing the older ozone-depleting R-22 (Freon).

What Is a R-410A?

R-410A (sold under brand names like Puron) became the standard refrigerant for new residential HVAC systems after R-22 was phased out. It operates at higher pressures than R-22, which means the two are not interchangeable — you can't simply swap refrigerants in an older system. R-410A is more environmentally friendly than R-22 and is generally more energy efficient. However, R-410A itself is now being phased down in favor of newer, lower-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants like R-454B.

Why It Matters for Your Home

If your system still uses R-22, getting it repaired with refrigerant is becoming increasingly expensive because the supply is limited. Understanding what refrigerant your system uses helps you make informed decisions about repair vs. replacement. Any technician working on your system should clearly explain what refrigerant it uses and what that means for your options.
