Contactor
An electrically controlled switch in your outdoor AC or heat pump unit that connects power to the compressor and fan motor when the thermostat calls for cooling.
What Is a Contactor?
The contactor is essentially a heavy-duty relay. When your thermostat signals for cooling (or heating with a heat pump), the contactor closes, connecting high-voltage power to your compressor and condenser fan motor. When the thermostat is satisfied, the contactor opens and disconnects power. Over time, the contactor's contact points can become pitted, burned, or stuck, which can cause the system to not start or not shut off properly.
Why It Matters for Your Home
A stuck contactor can keep your outdoor unit running continuously even when the thermostat isn't calling for cooling, wasting energy and potentially damaging the compressor. A failed contactor will prevent the outdoor unit from turning on at all. Like capacitors, contactors are relatively affordable to replace but can cause major problems if ignored.
