Condensate Drain
The pipe that carries water away from your air conditioner or furnace — water that forms when moisture condenses on the cold evaporator coil during cooling.
What Is a Condensate Drain?
When your AC runs, the cold evaporator coil causes moisture to condense out of the air, just like water forming on a cold glass. This water collects in a drain pan under the coil and flows out through the condensate drain line to a floor drain, exterior wall, or other discharge point. Over time, algae, mold, and debris can clog the drain line. Many systems have a safety float switch that shuts off the AC if the drain pan overflows, preventing water damage.
Why It Matters for Your Home
A clogged condensate drain is one of the most common AC service calls, and it can cause serious water damage if the safety switch fails or isn't installed. If you notice water pooling around your indoor unit or your AC unexpectedly shuts off on a hot day, a clogged drain is a likely culprit. Regular drain line maintenance during annual tune-ups prevents this common and potentially costly problem.
