Gas Valve

The safety device that controls the flow of natural gas or propane to your furnace burner, opening only when proper ignition conditions are confirmed.

What Is a Gas Valve?

The gas valve is a safety-critical component that controls fuel flow to your furnace burner. Modern gas valves receive signals from the furnace control board and only open when a series of safety checks pass: the draft inducer is running, the pressure switch confirms proper venting, and the ignitor is hot (or flame is detected). If any safety condition isn't met, the gas valve stays closed. Some furnaces use two-stage gas valves that can fire at low or high capacity depending on heating demand.

Why It Matters for Your Home

The gas valve is one of the most important safety devices in your furnace. If it fails to close properly, it creates a gas leak hazard. If it fails to open, you get no heat. Gas valve repairs and replacement should only be performed by a licensed, experienced technician who understands combustion safety. If you ever smell gas near your furnace, shut off the gas supply and call for help immediately.
